OVM CORVALIS MEET '99
By VJMC member Bill Melvin
"Hey I've got an idea," says Doc Speed to his better half.... "Sure Doc, a short jaunt just to warm the oil up. You know Doc, I think you ought to check your cam chain adjuster and the map! Its 2800 miles to Corvalis from here, and I'm positive (your) frickin cam chain has jumped its sprocket." "Well that is a little farther than I thought, but in the old days I'd have rode it non-stop." "Doc , in the old days you had a loose spoke, now-a-days you've got so many spokes missing, you couldn't beat tarnish to a brass door knob." Well I and Mrs. Speed ( Bill and Marge Melvin) decided to take a short cut, so we flew out to SanFrancisco from Michigan. Then hopped on a BMW and rode up the coast to Corvalis Oregon. After three days and 818 miles, we pulled into the Corvalis Event just in time for the Saturday night BBQ. The event is put on by the Oregon Vintage Motorcyclists (OVM), and is open to all types of vintage bikes and scooters. Its held in beautiful park setting at the Benton County Fair Grounds, where the OVM was also host to a fantastic display of Hodaka's and other Vintage Japanese motorcycles under the VJMC banner. Members from the Pabatco Trading Co. held a reunion that may never be equalled. There were more Hodakas on display than loose bolts on a Harley.
Member James Rozee from the VJMC was responsible, with others for organizing the terrific VJMC display and Hodaka involvement. James also had a good cache of vintage parts and literture for Honda's and Yamaguchi's. On display was a very original CB92,a CA95, a choice Super Hawk with racing seat,a dream with period solo seat, and many others, some of which are displayed in the accompaning photos.
Marge and I felt very lucky to attend such a pleasant event and to see so many beautiful bikes. Coupled with the trip up the rugged pacfic coast, awesome weather and a great group of bikers, I'm sure this will remain one of our favorite trips of all time. "Hey Mrs. Speed lets buzz over to Mid-Ohio for that VJMC event in July." "Sure thing Doc, and I suppose you will want to ride two up on the Mini Trail 50." "No can do, Mrs. Speed. I blew first gear racing that ZX 11 last Week." ************ Did you like Bill Melvin's article? Why not send Bill an e-mail!
